Government bodies involved in space development

  • Australian Government Space Portal - This portal contains information on the Australian Government's space-related activities, as well as links to Australian space companies and research organisations. The Australian Government is engaged in space-related activities in support of national strategic, economic and social outcomes as outlined in the Statement of the Australian Government's Space Engagement.  Space-related activities are administered by a range of Government agencies, with the Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources carrying prime responsibility for civil space issues.  Whole-of-Government liaison occurs through the Australian Government Space Forum, comprising representatives from Australian Government agencies with space-related interests.
  • Australian Defence Organisation JP 2008 - MILSATCOM The MILSATCOM project will provide satellite communications capabilities to support future ADF strategic and tactical communications needs. The project is structured as five major Phases.
  • Space Licensing and Safety Office - A Space Licensing and Safety Office (SLASO) has been established within the Department of Industry, Science and Resources to take responsibility for implementing the regulatory and safety regime for commercial space activities in Australia. It has responsibility for enforcing the provisions of the Space Activities Act and any Agreements entered into by the Commonwealth for commercial space launch projects.
  • Australian Centre for Remote Sensing - The Australian Centre for Remote Sensing (ACRES) is Australia's major satellite Remote Sensing organisation, which was established as the Australian Landsat Station in 1979.
  • Cooperative Research Centre for Satellite Systems (CRCSS) - Its purposes are: to establish Australian capability in microsatellite technologies; to develop expertise necessary for sustaining those industries and profiting from them; to test and develop Australian-developed intellectual property; and to provide a research platform for Australian space-science, communication and GPS studies.
  • CSIRO Office of Space Science and Applications (COSSA) - COSSA is a functional CSIRO Unit which aims to coordinate and promote CSIRO activities in national and international space science activities and earth observation. It is administered by CSIRO Atmospheric Research (www.dar.csiro.au).
  • IPS - Radio and Space Services is an agency of the Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources. It has extensive experience and expertise in analysing radio propagation and the frequency management aspects of radio communication systems, as well as monitoring and forecasting the space environment that supports them.
  • Woomera Range - The Woomera Prohibited Area remains in business as the largest land-based Range in eth western world, hosting a wide spectrum of ground, air and space activities for Australian and international and areospace organisations.
